Student Eco-Rep Current Projects

Student Eco-Reps work in teams to help implement sustainability projects with various campus partners. Each year, we solicit projects from the Penn community and select a handful of opportunities to implement in collaboration with Penn departments.

Housekeeping Sustainability Training

For the third year in a row, two Student Eco-Reps will work with staff in FRES Housekeeping to increase general knowledge of sustainability and help foster educational and engagement opportunities with Housekeeping staff. The team will conduct a series of focus groups with employees to measure their base knowledge of sustainability, which will be used to develop and conduct a series of trainings.

Dining Sustainability and Purchasing

Students will work with Bon Appetit catering services to collect and analyze dining purchasing data. These data will be used to complete the Real Food Calculator and recommend opportunities to boost Penn's spending with local vendors and increasing sourcing from third-party certified producers.

Campus Water Footprint

In collaborating with the Water Center at Penn, students will analyze campus historical water usage, identify gaps in data, and explore opportunities for reducing potable water use on campus.

Climate Literacy and Civic Engagement

Students will work with the Netter Center to develop a climate literacy assessment of Penn's undergraduate student body and K-12 schools in the area. Eco-Reps will provide recommendations for improving student climate literacy and expanding opportunities for a cohesive sustainability education at Penn and K-12 schools in the area.

Waste Reduction and Recycling in Nursing Simulation Labs

Eco-Reps will work with Penn Nursing staff and consultants from iSpring to identify and implement practices to reduce waste in Nursing Simulation labs. In previous years, student Eco-Reps worked with Nursing staff to understand best practices in simulation lab sustainability, research best practices at other institutions, and explore what Penn currently does through observation and meetings. Student Eco-Reps this year will use information from the previous year's project to implement waste reduction measures in Nursing simulation labs.
