Throughout spring and summer 2019, Penn Sustainability co-sponsored a series of Rubbish Cleanups on Penn's Campus, with a focus on cigarette litter. Volunteers armed with gloves and trash bags were assigned to different sections of campus, and each group used an iPhone app called Rubbish to identify areas not in compliance with Penn's tobacco-free campus policy. Over the course of four clean up sessions, volunteers collected 6,120 pieces of tobacco litter, which made up 96.4% of all the litter they found. Plans for future cleanup involve identifying tobacco litter-heavy areas and implementing sustainable solutions to keep them clean.
