ReThink: College Houses Encourage Student Recycling

Eco-Reps are hosting a house-wide recycling competition that rewards the floor that recycles the most by weight

College House Eco-Reps have been busy promoting the ReThink Your Footprint campaign this month. They have thought of creative ways to engage the student population and encourage waste minimization. Hill Eco-Reps plan on educating RAs, GAs, and students about what to do before leaving for Thanksgiving break to reduce their footprint. Eco-Reps in Ware are hosting a blind taste test of bottled water, tap water, and filtered water to discourage the consumption of bottled water. Gregory Eco-Reps are hosting a house-wide recycling competition that rewards the floor that recycles the most by weight. They are also planning an event that teaches individuals how to calculate their carbon footprint and what it means. Based on their result, participants then create “Carbon Footprint Art” that will serve as a visual reminder to reduce their footprint. At Rodin’s various events that provide food, Eco-Reps will provide small incentives (such as GCP cups) to residents who bring their own reusable plates, cups, and/or utensils. Numerous other events and initiatives—including zero-waste movie nights, zero-waste speaker events, and increased recycling efforts—will take place in College Houses to support the ReThink campaign.
