ReThink: Green Events Guide

November 9, 2015

Wondering how to reduce waste at your next department event? Look no further the Green Events Guide, a resource recently developed by the Green Campus Partnership and launching during ReThink Your Footprint. This guide provides tips that can be exercised at a variety of events, from department-wide gatherings to small staff meetings to lunchtime seminars.  Although the Green Events Guide includes sustainable suggestions that apply to all aspects of event planning, waste reduction strategies are a central focus of the guide.  Here are a few waste minimization tips pulled from the Green Events Guide:

  • Use paperless promotion strategies - advertise your event online and have guests register through online platforms like Eventbrite.
  • Reuse decorations, banners, and signs used in the past. If you are making new banners and signs, laminate them so that they can be reused in the future, although to do so you must exclude details (like dates) that could change from year to year.
  • If your event is catered, talk to your caterer about options for reusable dishware and silverware. Many caterers will provide reusable (aka, regular) plates, glassware, and utensils and will return to pick these items up at the end of the event.
  • Order food in bulk so as to reduce the amount of plastic wrap and packaging containers used in its delivery.
  • If you need to buy disposable items, paper is usually a better choice ecologically than plastic.

Consider making one of your upcoming events or meetings a green event as part of ReThink Your Footprint! Email and let us know how it went.
