ReThink: New Compost Site on Campus

November 6, 2015

University Landscape Architect Bob Lundgren and Landscape Planner Chloe Cerwinka are working with the University’s Urban Park Staff to create a new compost site for campus leaf litter. The site is located at the southern tip of Penn Park, next to the Maintenance Center and close to the Penn Park orchard. The site, which can produce over 200 cubic yards of compost, consists of a series of storage areas in which leaves will be turned intermittently until they have decomposed. From leaf to compost, the full process takes about two seasons, and the landscaping staff plan to “close the loop” by using the compost in landscaping projects around campus. Stay tuned for this new composting project!
