Report from the University of Pennsylvania Commuter Survey 2023, which surveyed the commuting habits and preferences of staff and faculty at the University of Pennsylvania.

The Penn Sustainability Office and Business Services Division (BSD) commissioned the Weitzman School of Design’s PennPraxis and the Center for Safe Mobility to design and execute a commuter behavior survey. In Spring 2023, the survey collected information about employee travel patterns and attitudes, with more than 4,000 valid responses from Penn employees across Penn’s 28 schools and divisions.

Penn students living between 40th and 43rd streets, and Baltimore and Chestnut streets, can schedule a free curbside pickup for their gently used items in May. Two professional movers and a box truck come directly to your door to haul your donations away—no heavy lifting, no logistics, no stress.

Furniture is redistributed to support local families throughout Philadelphia. Clothing and electronics are reused or responsibly recycled. Every item given helps keep these items out of landfills while supporting our neighbors in Philadelphia.

Check this page in May for the pickup scheduling link.

The Cleaner, Greener Off-Campus Move-Out program makes donating unwanted items at the end of the year easy with curbside collection for both donations and bulk trash. Facilitated by Penn Sustainability, the Office of Social Equity & Community, Facilities and Real Estate Services, and the Office of Community & Government Affairs, the program reduces neighborhood litter and keeps supplies within the community through an easy donation system.

Philadelphia Furniture Bank employees load donations from Penn students into their truck.
Purpose

A Cleaner, Greener Move-Out. Keep useable supplies out of landfills and within the community.

2025 Results

Over 150 pickup orders diverted 670 items from landfills, equaling an estimated 14,000 pounds of materials going to Philadelphians exiting homelessness through the Philadelphia Furniture Bank.
